Old City
Philadelphia, PA 19106
Cross Street: Samsom Walk
From $115 double; from $190 suite; $25 per additional person. Rates include breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese

This 1769 Georgian row house sits almost directly across from the back of Independence Park in busy Old City, and is owned by the federal government, which kept the shell and gutted the interior. The Colonial setting includes an entrance decorated with map illustrations and secretary desks, and a parlor with pink sofas and replica Chippendale furniture. Guest rooms -- most with double beds, some with queen-size -- are cheerful and comfortable, with period furnishings and basic, modern-day amenities. The inn serves a continental breakfast (with homemade muffins) on weekdays, and a full breakfast on weekends. Evening time calls for snacks: wine and cheese, and, later on, fresh-baked cookies. The hotel is named for its first occupant, the doctor who cofounded Pennsylvania Hospital with Benjamin Franklin.
