General Information
On May 11, 1938 the 12th Ward Stringband was formed by Harry T. Lawson. The Band was later renamed and has paraded as " Avalon" Stringband since 1944. The Band was named after a popular brand of cigarettes

As a String Band we perform upbeat music that features saxophones, banjos, accordions and percussion in the style of Philadelphia's Mummers Parade. Our custom sound has deep roots in traditional American sing along music, Mummersminstrel standards and other genres like popular music from the early to mid 1900’s, swing, and big band. These are sure to please any crowd. Our current song collection is played by a talented group of musicians that range from 12 to 60 years of age.  Each takes tremendous pride in his performance and ability to put a smile on your face! Our musical roster includes seventy musicians.  During your consultation, we will customize the perfect ensemble for your event.

  • Strut: For our 2012 presentation of "Avalon in Wonderland" the Avalon String Band brought our audience down the rabbit hole into zany world of the Mad Hatter.  From the Tea Party to our Cheshire Cats, the wacky world of these characters shone through for everyone's amusement. New costumes are designed yearly for use in Philadelphia’s New Years Day Parade. They are designed to coordinate with the unique theme chosen for that performance.  The costumes are made of rich materials adorned with sequins, mirrors, and elaborate plumage. In the past we've worn costumes portraying the cowboys, leprechauns and Cubans.
Events: For some events, the band performs in our official Avalon Concert Attire which includes a maroon logo staff shirt with black trousers.  In summer months, we can scale it down to our staff shirts and tan khaki shorts.
  • Contact:No matter the look, our band will be attired uniformly to compliment the overall spirit of your event.
