Founded in 1935 by James A. Durning the band first marched in 1935 in the Philadelphia mummers Parade the theme for the parade was Musical Troubadours. In 1944 the ban was renamed as the James V Durning Streing Band, in honor of the founder son, who was listed as missing in action during World War II.

In 1988 Durning merge with Garden State String Band out of Gloucester City New Jersey. During its proud history and consistently working Mummers to be competitive each and every year, Durning has played for Pope John Paul when he came to Philadelphia in 1979. They also performed for Pres. Gerald Ford and the Pennsylvania governor Dick Thornburgh at a Christmas party during that same year.

Some other inspirational moments for the string band the Miss America beauty pageant parade Atlantic City, New Jersey, the Strawberry Festival Buchanan, West Virginia and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. They were also the first band perform in the Raleigh, North Carolina Christmas parade winning the best man performance honors.
There have been nine captains over the past 75 years. These nine captains have won top honors in 12 times over the years.

  • Rehersals: The Durning string band traditionally holds the rehearsals on Tuesday evenings. Presently the band rehearsals at the VFW in Oaklyn, New Jersey the VFW is located on the beautiful lakefront property on the 5 Manor Avenue Oaklyn, NJ 08107. There are plenty of parking spots and a secure lot. Rehearsals start at 10 PM.

    Of course comadaraderie is ample During the rehearsals are band members enjoy sitting around talking about the past and of course the upcoming New Years Day Parade.
  • Mission: Currently the Durning string band only has a minimal assessment necessarily to maintain fiscal stability we offer memberships to both musicians, marshals and social members.
    We consider ourselves a family oriented organization, being a co-ed band we can have all family members march up the street on New Year's Day whether in a costume or being one of the “men in black” marshals.

  • Awards: Durning is known for entertaining and competing with fun original themes. We won the most creative theme award which was voted by our peers and also oneWPLL channel 17 “Custards Last Stand”  award.
